Nancy Mayborn Peterson grew up in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. She is a 1954 graduate from Scottsbluff Junior College (SJC), which is now Western Nebraska Community College, with an associate degree in Journalism. Nancy was a positive force on campus and participated in many activities including Campus Y, Delta Psi Omega, Booster Club, and Choir. She developed her leadership skills as Vice President Associated Women Students and Student Council Secretary. Nancy honed her passion of journalism as Staff and Assistant Editor of the Panhandler, the college’s annual yearbook. Her education at SJC was a very good foundation for her and opened her eyes to the possibility of becoming a writer. She has used things she learned at the community college all of her life and claims some of her more memorable teachers taught here. Nancy has been a published writer for over 40 years and her early works appeared in such magazines as The Reader's Digest, American History, Ford Times, Scouting, Good Housekeeping, Arizona Magazine, Wild West, Persimmon Hill, True West, The Denver Post's Empire Magazine. Nancy has written five books focused on Frontier History and Historical Fiction. Her works focus on individual people and their reactions when they face a challenging situation. Her books include Walking in Two Worlds: Mixed-Blood Indian Women Seeking Their Path; People of Moonshell: A Platte River History; and People of the Old Missury: Years of Conflict. Her most recent novel entitled Not to be Forgiven, is a story about the Greggory family from Hiram’s Spring, Nebraska, that discovers how World War II can touch even those thousands of miles from the battlefront. Nancy was married for over 60 years to her college sweetheart and fellow alumni, Jim Peterson. She currently lives in Lincoln, Nebraska.
